Beauty Q&A: Gina Modica, Lead Makeup Artist for "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette"

If you are a member of Bachelor Nation you have already seen the beautiful work of celebrated makeup artist Gina Modica. Gina took a break from her busy schedule to chat with me about her career and her experience as the lead artist for ABC's "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette."

1. How did you begin your career as a makeup artist?

When I began my career, social media did not exist. I had to take my book (an industry term for a portfolio) and personally meet with photographers and production companies. I also volunteered my time on photoshoots and student films to get ANY experience that I could to build my book and reel.

I started my career applying makeup for print and editorial projects. While working with photographers I learned a lot about photography and lighting. I believe that knowledge really helped my career because I understand how lighting can affect my work and how to adjust it accordingly.

2. How did you end up working on "The Bachelor"?

I was working for a network called TVG and Chris Harrison was a host on one of their shows. When he got the job with "The Bachelor," he took me with him. I have been with the Bachelor franchise since the second season.

3. What have been your biggest challenges as the lead makeup artist for "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette?"

Keeping lipstick on the Bachelorettes and fighting jet lag, haha! Honestly, it is a dream job. I get to work with great people and travel to amazing places! For me, there is no downside.

4. Speaking from experience, filming on the Bachelor can go into the wee hours of the morning. What are some of your tips for making your makeup last all day….and sometimes night?

I use great products! I usually airbrush the Bachelorette's foundation, especially on long Rose Ceremony nights. I like Temptu's Perfect Canvas foundation. It has always worked well for me and I rarely have to touch up the foundation, even on hour fourteen! For eyes and cheeks, I use creams as they seem to last the longest with the least amount of touchup. Oh, and of course waterproof mascara and eyeliner!

5. Proper skincare really helps makeup to look it's best. What do you use to prepare a skin before makeup applications?

My favorite skincare line that is always in my kit is Glycelene. Their products are vegan, natural and organic! I try to introduce it to the talent; if they don’t already have favorite products of their own. The "must-have" products from Glycelene that I always keep on hand are Luxury Cleanser, Cucumber Cleansing Water, Beauty Serum, Rejuvenation Creme, and Opalescent Eye Serum.

6. You are also responsible for making Chris Harrison and the Bachelors look their best, what is the process for the men's grooming?

Skincare is number one! The Bachelors don't typically wear makeup, (except for Rose Ceremony nights) so their skin needs to look great! I also make sure their hair is regularly trimmed and if they have facial stubble or a beard, that it stays maintained.

7. What is next for you in your career?

I don’t know exactly, I would love to think that there will continue to be many new show projects and possibly a product line in my future. The great thing about being a freelance makeup artist is there is always something new coming around the corner! All I know for sure is that whatever I have to look forward to next in my career, it will be very hard to top the job I have now!

8. What inspires your work?

I am inspired by every person I work on. On the show, I get the pleasure of working with a new person every season. I enjoy getting to know the lead personally and then creating looks for them with their personality in mind. It is always fun and inspiring!

9. What three beauty products could you not live without?

Sunscreen, Glycelene's Neroli Nectar, and mascara.

10. In all Glamour Grasp Q&A's we ask, "what is your definition of beauty?"

Self-confidence! If you have true confidence in who you are and your abilities, to me that is beautiful.
